Revving up for a Good Cause
The Classic Vehicle Show included classic cars from all eras, motorbikes and tractors and even a model steam train which provided rides for the children. There was a bouncy castle, art competition for the children to design ‘faces’ for the tractors and the ever popular tombola! However, the most entertaining activity by far was the tug of war where the villagers took on one of the tractors. Much huffing and puffing ensued, and eventually the villagers’ came out victorious. The sun shone and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves at the show in Guilden Morden in what has been described as a ‘fantastic day’ by the organisers. The event raised over £500 for the charity and people across the village got involved.
Chris Boardman and some Friends from the Women’s Institute were supplying the teas and cakes, the Edward VII pub was selling refreshments, ice creams and burgers were also available.
Chairman for Wheels for Martin’s Friends, Peter Furmston, who has been involved with the charity for over 35 years, said there was a ‘good crowd’ at the one day event and he was hopeful to build on this for next year. He would like to express a huge thank you to all the volunteers, exhibitors and visitors who supported the event.
Wheels for Martin’s Friends is a small, local charity based in the village. Most of the funds are raised locally and they offer help to people in Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire with providing mobility solutions for disabilities. The charity was originally formed in 1989, when it was called “Wheels for Martin”. The purpose was to raise funds to buy Martin Dellar, who lived in Guilden Morden, an electric wheelchair. Various events were arranged and the target of £1,200 was well surpassed - raising a total of just over £6,000 which was used to help Martin even further and also some other young people with similar needs. Although Martin is no longer with us, it was decided the fundraising would continue. The charity was then renamed “Wheels for Martin’s Friends”. Over £400,000 has been raised to date and all of this money has been used to provide mobility equipment for over one hundred people. Standard wheelchairs have also been placed in the local villages and doctor surgeries for the use of residents and visitors in temporary need. |
